Group of participants piled up on the trampoline for a quick photo!
When Co-founders, Sarah and Chris sat down to build the nonprofit organization, Different Heroes, the end goal was simple: Let's give kids and adults with limb differences another reason to SMILE; let's show them they are super, just the way they are! Chris' mother was born with a limb difference of one of her feet and Sarah's son, the now 7 year old CEO of Different Heroes, was born with limb differences to both of his hands and feet. Chris grew up seeing the struggles his mom faced to fit in, find confidence, and to find others who could relate. Raising Cam in a time where limb different awareness has been far more common, Sarah saw how much yearly limb difference camps and being around others with limb differences gave him a hero (mentor so to speak) to show him that he too is super and can be anything he wants to be, despite his differences. Chris and Sarah both thought it would be nice to provide more opportunities for children and adults with any type of limb difference to meet others like them, at little to no cost to the families. To date, Different Heroes has provided over 60 custom 3D printed prosthetic style devices to kids all around the world, sponsored transportation to and from camps in he form of "fun busses" (limo style party busses!), sent care packages pre or post surgery, sponsored dolls from A Doll Like Me, provided limb difference camp scholarships, sponsored day events for limb difference families, among many other things! the goal is always to help another Hero, who may not yet know just how special he or she is, learn to love themselves and be confident in their own skin (or cape!)... At DH we have a motto, Hero Through It! This is our way of saying... - You can do it! -Push through this! -Keep it up! Can't is not an option! When things get hard or you start to feel down, just... Hero Through It! You can see by the photos below, the Hero Through It attitude carried through the night. No legs? No problem. Need two hands? Nope! The adults mentor the kids and the kids keep the adults, well... motivated to keep going! Even the siblings and parents get to join in because we want the whole family to embrace the positive mentality that a limb difference is not a bad thing. It is not scary or ugly. It is not sad or limiting. Living with a limb difference, like any difference for that matter, is another part of what makes you, YOU. Being unique should be embraced because it means you are extra special. Nothing stops a person with a will to - HERO THROUGH IT! :) From air blobs and foam pits, to pizza and cupcakes, to facials and make-overs, to goodie-bags and gifts from local and far away sponsors, this night was a fun filled night we will never forget! We had people come from as far as Texas and Florida and families just right outside of Charlotte and Raleigh. It was a melting pot of fun, acceptance, overcoming obstacles, laughter and lots of love!
